I visited Shenzhen this week, to speak at the Tizen Developer Conference on Context Aware Apps with Machine Learning. While I was there, I observed some interesting trends for mobile that were slightly different from the global market.
1. Companies like Tencent and Baidu are building core utility apps from stocks to browsers to compete for user engagement
2. These apps have a custom user interfaces rather than following the standard OS guidelines
Tencent’s Portfolio app for stocks
3. These Chinese companies are not missing the smartwatch opportunity, they’ve developed some really useful watch apps
4. They are focussing on China even though many of their products can be applied worldwide
5 Even big game companies like Rovio are focussing on China as a key market
6 Personally from my experience, although there is volume in the Chinese mobile market, per user ROI & engagement is pretty low
7 Lots of developers/startups from outside are interested of getting in the Chineese market with their apps but fragmentation of App Stores is a big barrier
Apart from that I interacted with the academic community, students have keen interests in areas like Machine Learning and the Cloud. It was also interesting to see how a company like DJI is winning over customers with their high quality drones and an Apple Store like retail experience.
